Inventing a School: Expanding the Boundaries of Learning
Published in Hardcover by Neapolitan Books (02 November, 1999)
Authors: Jane Kern and Robert David Ward
Average review score:

Ideal reading for anyone designing a quality school
Jane Kern presented a realistic, detailed picture of the challenges she faced when creating a quality school. The detailed events, hurdles, outcomes, and fellowship bonds allow the reader to actualize her experiences. A must read for educators creating a charter, magnet or private school. As the founding principal of MAST Academy, a USDOE Blue Ribbon School of Excellence,I related to the passion, energy, conviction, anddetermination Jane demonstrated in the school'sevolving years. The leadership, competency, fellowship, and pride among the faculty, parents, students and administration helped create a fabulous school. Well done!

Read this and you will want your child to go to Seacrest!
An open, heartfelt look at a school, from beginning to present. Jane held nothing back - she wrote her feelings, her inspirations and most importantly, about the issues and accomplishments that make Seacrest Country Day School what it is today. My kids are going to read this so they, too, can truly appreciate the efforts and caring that have made their school so unique and special. A truly wonderful book written with love and dedication by a special lady about her incredible journey.

A fresh approach to the crisis in education.
Dr. Kern, her students and their parents have developed a solution to the impasse currently plaguing education. How does one strike a balance between the cookie cutter method of teaching and methods allowing children more freedom of choice in devloping their interests? Hers is a fresh approach and the results speak for themselves. Anyone interested in bettering our schools should read this book.

Landing in New Jersey With Soft Hands
Published in Paperback by North Atlantic Books (June, 1994)
Author: BJ Ward
Average review score:

He's no T.S. Eliot--thank God!
First I must credit Deborah Garrison and her book, "A Working Girl Can't Win," for even getting me interested in poetry after learning to hate it throughout high school.

Then I must credit my friend Misty for telling me about Mr. Ward's books. While I am not a fanatic like she is, I certainly appreciate his very real voice speaking to regular folks like me instead of above our heads. He brings us along for many little rides in this book--I especially love the poem where he is nine and the priest makes him believe he is Jesus! There is truth here, with humor and sadness.

I wish I could give it six stars!
I happened upon B.J. Ward the poet, looking for B.J. Ward the opera singer! I thought she would be performing at the College of New Jersey Writers Conference, so I went all the way to Trenton from Astoria, NY. How disappointed I was when I see this necktied white guy get up there and start reciting poetry! How elated I was after his first piece, his second piece, and--the highlight for me--his baseball poem! His books were sold out at the table, so I ordered them both from Amazon.com and can't praise him highly enough! To paraphrase Keatxs, I feel like a new star has just been discovered in my sky. This guy is terrific. I am actually looking for some first editions of his books--I think they'll be worth a lot someday.

One of the finest first books I have ever read!
I first encountered BJ Ward's poetry in the February issue of Poetry Magazine--an incredible poem called "The Star-Ledger." I ordered both his books based on the quality of that poem. I am so glad I did. I feel I've discovered a new world! He is writing with a voice that reminds me a little of the cavalierness of William Carlos Williams, the passion of Pablo Neruda, and the serious playfulness of Anne Sexton. I can't wait for his next book to be released.

The Last Wilderness: Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
Published in Paperback by WildLight Press (07 September, 2001)
Authors: Kennan Ward and Robert Redford
Average review score:

Nature Performs
It is amazing how this book gives you a personal feel for the animals and their environment. The wildlife is perfectly comfortable and nature performs for Kennan Ward. He has the connection and a gift for capturing nature in its most potent moments. This book is a work of love and pristine beauty! If this land is allowed to be exploited for oil, this could be the last record of this incredible wilderness.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: to Be or Not to Be
Kennan Ward's book contains stunning photographs of the land, plants, and animals of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Mr. Ward writes from his personal experiences as a photographer and naturalist. Kennan published this book to help keep this pristine wilderness area a place of incredible beauty and wildlife diversity. His book makes a strong visual argument for the case of preserving this wildlife area from oil drilling. He does this by showing photographs of the significant environmental impact of oil companies in Alaska. I hope this book will not be a reminder of what the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was like, but instead, what it will continue to be for future generations of people and wildlife that come to this "last wilderness." I would highly recommend this book to any person who would like to learn more about the wildlife and environmental issues pertaining to the Refuge.

A World Worth Saving
Beautiful photo essay on the Alaska Wilderness with a hopeful bequest to future generations of animals and all who love America's wild places.

The Retirement Nightmare: How to Save Yourself from Your Heirs and Protectors: Involuntary Conservatorships and Guardianships (Golden Age Series)
Published in Paperback by Prometheus Books (May, 2000)
Author: Diane G. Armstrong Ph.D.
Average review score:

An uncoventional but effective planning guide.
Retirement Nightmare isn't your typical retirement guide on how to save up enough money or make investments: its focus is on how to protect yourself from heirs, and chapters survey involuntary conservatorship and guardianships with an eye to revealing how incapacitated seniors fall victim to the statutes designed to help them in their old age. Advance planning is recommended as the key to avoiding situations such as the author's own experience and those described in courtroom cases.

Thankful for this work
Dr. Armstrong has produced a document vital to the safeguarding of personal dignity in today's world. In language accessible by anyone reading the book, she dissects complex legal matters and lays them out in plain view for all to understand. This book should be required reading for all people tasked with ensuring our personal rights within the framework of our various legal systems. It should also be recommended reading for anyone when the natural course of life puts them in a position of reliance on the ethics and goodwill of others...even those 'nearest and dearest' to them. When we are vulnerable... that's when we need help. This book gives us the ammunition to help ourselves. Everyone intends to survive the journey to the retirement years; this book exposes some of the ambushes that others have found there and lays out steps each of us should take to avoid those ambushes. As proof that fact can be scarier than fiction, this book will curl your hair quicker than anything King has ever put on paper.

An Invaluable Source
As a lawyer, I found this book to be a tour de force compendium of the guardian and conservatorship laws in our country. For both lay readers and lawyers, it is an invaluable reference tool - comprehensive and clearly written. Full of actual stories of actual individuals, it also makes for eye-opening human interest drama.

Schaum's Outline of Human Anatomy and Physiology
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 April, 1997)
Authors: Kent M. Van De Graaff and R. Ward Rhees
Average review score:

The Best A & P Study Guide
Do you want an "A" and still have a life? Then buy this book. I've gotten A's from my first two A&P classes because of it.

I have no science background. The assigned textbook is so huge I avoid looking at it as much as possible. Instead, I rely on my lecture notes and Schaum's when ever I can. Yes, there are times I am forced to use my assigned text, but there are plenty of times when Schaum's covers the point without wasting my time, and highlights important concepts as well.

So do yourself a favor and buy this Outline...unless you like the idea of going blind over a 50 pound tome while your social life withers and dies from neglect.

Concise but thorough review of Anatomy and Physiology
This book is great if you don't like reading long textbooks. It's easy to read and makes Anatomy and Physiology more interesting. I was recommended this book from a friend who used this book and another study guide and got over a 90 average. The other two books I highly recommend are the following:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Vol 1) ISBN: 0971999619
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Vol 2) ISBN: 0971999627
The last two study guide showed me the kind of questions I saw on my college exams. My friend was right. I used these 3 books and also got an "A" in my college A and P class.

Good Resource for Applying Your Knowledge
I just completed my first semester of Anatomy and Physiology.

Everyone had told me that "repetition, repetition, repetition" was the key to getting the grade in this class. Our textbook did have a handful of review questions at the end of each chapter and the CD-ROM included also had quizzes to take.

I was doing the questions and quizzes, like everyone else in my class, but kept getting lower than desirable marks on my nearly daily quizzes.

After I bought this book and studied from it, I saw a dramatic increase in my scores. My lab partner was shocked that I had done so much better than her. She is a fast learner and typically gets perfect scores. I told her about this outline, she immediately bought a copy, and together we both finished the course with A's.

I think it is important to test your knowledge by applying it. The more resources, the better. If you are like me, you easily tire at looking at the same pages over and over. This book gave organized summaries and had excellent Q&A's.

At the price of around $12, it is worth the money!

DK Handbooks: Shells
Published in Paperback by Dk Pub Merchandise (01 October, 2000)
Authors: S. Peter Dance and Matthew Ward
Average review score:

A very good intro shell book
Dance has once again developed a useful shell book for the beginner. Excellent specimens are shown in full color photos. Some basic info on depth different species and habitat is also given. I have two problems with the book that provent me from giving it 5 Stars. First are the locality maps. The text lists accurate locality but the maps are way off. For example a species only found in the Philippines is shown as occurring across the whole Indo-Pacific. A novice or someone who isn't so hot in geography is going to have problems with that. Second, I wish they had more represenative species. It's a little thin in the diversity of shells. Overall though a useful starter.

I thought it was a fantastic first-field guide.
However, I was a little annoyed at the scarcity of the other regions in the book, mostly because I was interested in finding out about the shells within the area in which I visit to go shelling. However, I thought it was a wonderful first-field-guide with excellent color pictures, specific descriptions, indication of common\uncommon, and the size of the shells.

Picture Perfect
This has to be one of the most useful books I have bought. The photography is very clear. The colors are also good. Best of all I can see all of this without my bifocals.

Hunger
Published in Hardcover by Forge (April, 2001)
Author: Jane Ward
Average review score:

Food and Life
A superb novel that mixes the quest for 'the perfect meal' with the quest for 'the perfect life.' You can try for both but the journey not the end is it's own reward. Thought provoking and entertaining. Must read.

"Hunger" Feeds You Body and Soul
I am an avid readier and I was enthralled with this book. I was unable to put it down once I started reading it. "Hunger" completely captured my attention from the start. Anna Rossi, the title character was so interesting, so human. She came alive through the pages of this book. I felt that she was a friend that I wanted to talk to and offer support. I could relate to her conflict and her struggles. I envied the fact that she could pour herself into her cooking and that it was theraputic for her and such a gift to others.

I became emotionally involved in the story. I became Anna's cheerleader and wanted to see her succeed. I was angry with Michael and I could not grasp his way of dealing with everything.

I would highly recommend this novel to anyone that enjoys a great story that wraps itself around you from the start to the finish. Bottom-line this novel feeds your body and your soul.

An emotional feast!
Besides being simply entertaining, Hunger will make you experience every emotion. You can FEEL the characters' sadness, their anger, their desire and passion. You will at times feel sympathy for Anna and then at other times want to wring her neck!! leaving you starving for the ending and her final decision about Michael and James.....

Good book to learn the foundations of COM
COM is built on top of RPC. This book is a bit dated, but still a good guide for learning the technology that COM is based on. COM will make much more sense if you take a little time to learn RPC first.

Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony: An Illustrated History
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (October, 1999)
Authors: Geoffrey C. Ward, Martha Saxton, Ann D. Gordon, Ellen Carol Dubois, and Paul Barnes
Average review score:

Wonderful recounting of many important women
This book fills a glaring need in history books. Not many people know more about Susan B. Anthony than she was one the dollar coin. This book corrects that oversight, and then some. Not only does the book give a balanced and well thought out look at Anthony and Stanton, the reader is also introduced to many, many other women who worked so hard for women rights.
I especially liked that the book didn't shy away from some of these women's more controversial stands, such as taking on the black person's cause.
All in all, a very good book.

Every Woman should read this book!
This book provides insight and history on the struggle that women went through to get the right to vote. It includes all kinds of interesting background and perspectives. It was a real eye opener for me and I'm giving it as a gift to all the young women I know.

What every woman should know
This book was an eye opener for me. Every woman should read this book to understand the fight for our right to vote. These women devoted their lives to something they knew they would never even see in their live time! Its a story of courage and strength. It's makes one feel proud to be a woman.

Padre Pio the Stigmatist
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (January, 1992)
Authors: Charles Mortimer Carty, Barbara Ward, and Thomas A. Nelson
Average review score:

Amazing story of a very holy man
Padre Pio, one of the most renowned modern-day Blesseds, was a very holy man loved by many people. The charisms he was blessed with by the Holy Spirit are truly amazing to read about, including bilocation, the odor of sanctity, as well as his most famous gift, the stigmata. The accounts of miracles attributed to his intercession are unbelieveable, and I'm sure they're just a small amount of the great deeds this man has done. This man seems MORE than a man, forgetting to eat meals, having great favor with the Lord, and sometimes being invisible from others. He comforted many dying souls in their last agony. This is a great compilation of the wonders of the great Blessed Padre Pio.

Holy Man of God, Thank You Padre Pio
This was an excellent book, Examples of many, many miracles, Many insights to the wisdom and knowledge of heaven. Wonderful book.

**An Extraordinary Story About a Saint of Our Time**
Padre Pio was canonized St. Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. There are many books written about him, and this is one of the best and most complete. He was a Capuchin friar born in southern Italy in 1887 and died in 1968. He bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, for 50 years. He also possessed other unusual qualities, such as bilocation, odor of perfume, the reading of hearts, miraculous cures, remarkable conversions and prophetic insight. Because of his ability to read hearts many people sought to confess their sins to him. Although he heard confessions for 12 to 14 hours a day, it was necessary to register 10 days in advance because so many people desired his spiritual direction.

I highly recommend this book and also "Stories of Padre Pio" by Madame Katharina Tangari.
